Akira.
If you haven't seen Akira you can't call yourself an anime fan.
Made in 1988 and set in 2019 (IIRC) Akira is a pure classic. The music is the best I've seen in an anime and will top any game I've played, the graphics where well ahead of its' time with every scene being hand drawn and painted to perfection and has a great story to boot.

Re: Akira.
Are you kidding? Akira was a horrible, horrible movie. The drawings are poor and the animation was iffy. Astro Boy is where it's at if you're talking old.

Final part of the final episode of Astro Boy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sibar1qO4Ds (I was too lazy to find the jap/ Mighty Atom version)
Motor bike scene from Akira:

If you want to make an Astro boy/ Mighty Atom topic no one will stop you.

Re: Akira.
Yeah, that makes sense. Putting a 2400 Page manga into an hour and a half, giving it terrible plot and virtually no character development, they had better make the quality just slightly better than Astro boy, which was made years prior. And again, the poor drawings. I could play a game of chess on that forehead.

Quality/ quantity of a manga does not effect how good the movie is (granted it wasn't a smart thing to compress it to 124 mins).
Terrible plot, how?
Virtually no character development:
Granted for Kay, the General and the Espers however the other characters have plenty.
And now you're saying the drawings are poor because of a forehead.

Re: Akira.
Terrible plot how?
To start, at the beginning a character swerves to miss a smurf. Seriously. A SMURF. This also doubles as bad animation/drawing. Apparently he's from a government project to merge the Blue Man Group with hobbits. Interesting.
A guy loses his arm and survives (let's call him stupid as I don't recall his name), mutates into a giant blob, a previously-dead psychic kid is summoned and he somehow manages to make stupid go far away in a different universe and now stupid has god-like powers. Here is another example of bad animation/drawing. I have concluded that it's Jared before Subway.
Not to mention the fact that psychic-kid previously turned the entire city into a wasteland, and now everyone likes him. It's completely random and breaks half the laws of physics in one go. The director practically threw every retarded thing that he could think of to make an ending.
No character development pretty much shows through when you have about 45 minutes of things happening. The other 45 minutes compromises of sound effects. Here is an example.

And when they do talk, all the characters do is bicker amongs one another. I haven't heard that much talking since "The Council of Elrond."
All in all, there is a couple things gained from Akira. One is that people with an inferiority complex take stuff and pull a Godzilla. Another is that people with motorcycles are immortal and can survive attacks from anyone. And lastly, don't pick on people with abnormally big heads lest they somehow gain superpowers and try to kill you.
To finally drive the stake in, here is a final example of the terrible drawing. You'd think with all the power in the cosmos he'd get himself better clothing, a decent haircut, and some proper shading. Not to mention it looks like someone took a picture of a stone chair, then superimposed the guy on it. It's all one peice, so the creator obviously took his time doing the chair but not the characters.

Re: Akira.
I like Akira, even though it left me scared to look at stuffed animals and toys again.

Re: Akira.
I know this topic is like two years old, but I think that Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack is probably the best Anime OST. <_<
