Re: Hyper's Playthrough: Pokemon Gold
After one quick heal at the pokemon center, we're ready to see what Violet City has to offer.
Walk a little south of the town and you'll reach this fruit tree. It has a berry that cures paralyzes, so it's worth it to check out.
If you try to go any farther south, this guy will stop you and say you should take on the pokemon gym before going through.
Talking to the townsfolk reveals that there's a wiggly tree up ahead. We'll check that out later.
This guy will trade you an onix if you give him a bellsprout. This trade isn't really worth it because bellsprout is a WAY better pokemon than onix. This trade would've been worth it if the onix was holding a metal coat, though.
And that's about all there is to check on around town. The only things left to do are to take on the gym and sprout tower.
And here we are at sprout tower. I'm pretty sure this place is optional, though. If you talk to this old lady, she'll tell you about how a bellsprout over 100 feet tall grew and formed (bell)sprout tower. Anyway, let's head up these stairs and get to the 2nd floor.
Believe it or not, pokemon are actually walking around sprout tower for some reason (but only on the 2nd and 3rd floors). The pokemon on these floors are:
In the Morning
Rattata, levels 3-6, Rarity: 100%
During the Day
Rattata, levels 3-6, Rarity: 100%
At Night
Gastly, levels 4-6, Rarity: 85%
Rattata, levels 3-5, Rarity: 15%
Gastly is our newest pokemon, and is definitely worthwhile. It has great special attack and speed, and the only real drawback is that you can only get its final evolution through trading. Gastly evolves into Haunter at level 25 and into Gengar through trading.
Going up the stairs leaves you with little choice but to walk right. There's a trainer here, and although I tried my best not to battle him, he saw me and WE HAD TO BATTLE. This place is a pain to go through if you're using totodile because every trainer has a bellsprout, and some of them use nothing BUT bellsprout. All of the bellsprout know vine whip, so these battles are actually pretty tough. Rage makes the battles much easier, though. Totodile also got to level 12 from that fight.
Go down the stairs next to that guy and you'll see an item. It's just a paralyze heal, though. Walk westward and you'll see this trainer, who, just like the last guy, has three bellsprout. Rage took care of them, although I went back to heal at a pokemon center (just in case).
Go up the stairs south from that trainer and you'll find another item. It's an X defend this time. There's also another trainer here, who ALSO uses three bellsprout.
There are some more stairs to the right of that trainer. Take those, and you'll be on the final floor. There's also a potion to the left of the stairs.
The first guy here has just one level 6 bellsprout. Not hard to beat at all. Totodile also got to level 13 and learned water gun, its first water attack!
This guy also uses just one level 6 bellsprout. I went back to the pokemon center and healed. Now we're ready to take on the final monk guy! (Note: I didn't battle that one other guy, but he's got a bellsprout and a hoothoot in case you're wondering)
But it seems the thief has already beaten us to the punch! It looks like they had just finished battling. The leader of the monks gives him an HM (as well as a long talk about how he should treat his pokemon better).
Our rival walks over to us and says he only cares about pokemon that can win. He then uses an escape rope and teleports out of the tower.
By the way, there's an escape rope here in case you need to get out of the tower.
Now we're ready to battle this guy. He's the strongest of the bunch, so be prepared!
First he sends out bellsprout, and rage does its magic. Totodile got to level 14, and he sends out a bellsprout that is exactly identical to his first. We beat them easily, but his final pokemon is level 10 and a slightly bigger challenge. You'll never guess what it is.
It's a hoothoot. Two rages takes it down, and we've won the match!
Huzzah! We've gotten our first HM: Flash. Flash can light up dark caves outside of battle and lowers the opponent's accuracy while in battle.
And with that, we've officially conquered sprout tower. Next time we'll take on the gym and get the Zephyr badge!

Re: Hyper's Playthrough: Pokemon Gold
Alright, let's get started with the first gym. The Violet City gym is led by Falkner, who specializes in flying type pokemon. Falkner has the lowest leveled pokemon of any gym leader ever, so this should be easy.
As you might guess, the trainers in this gym only use flying type pokemon.
This guy just has a spearow, which isn't much of a challenge. We got to level 15 from that fight.
This guy just has a pidgey. Once again, nothing even mildly challenging.
And here we have Falkner. He talks about how some people think that you can just "clip the wings of bird pokemon with electric attacks" and about how magnificent bird pokemon are. He's about as tough as any other trainer you've fought, though.
And so the battle begins. He starts off with a pidgey, which we take out in one shot thanks to a critical hit. Next he sends out pidgeotto, which for some reason is level 9. After a few hits, his pidgeotto is also down. We've won!
By the way, if you picked cyndqauil, this fight might actually be a bit challenging. His pidgey knows mud slap (a ground type attack), which is super effective against cyndaquil. It also lowers your accuracy, meaning you'll have a hard time getting hits in.
Falkner congratulates us and gives us the zephyr badge. And with that, we've taken out the first gym!
We also get mud slap, which isn't too good of a move. It doesn't do that much damage, but it always lowers the foe's accuracy. I wouldn't recommend teaching it to your pokemon.
As soon as we leave the gym, Prof. Elm gives us a call. He tells us that he's sent his assistant over to a nearby pokemon center. What could the assistant have for us?
Once we go in the pokemon center and talk to his assistant, he tells us that Prof. Elm wants to ask us to help him out on something else.
He wants to give us the egg! Not one to not accept, I take the offer. This egg will eventually hatch into a pokemon, but I won't tell you which pokemon. Not yet.
Next time, we'll head out for Azalea Town!

So close to evolving Totodile. I believe it's level 18, right?
